NEW MEXICO 2007 HUNTS
NEW ELK AND
DEER DRAWING SYSTEM IN NEW MEXICO
Deadline for Applying is: April 7, 2007
In
years past, New Mexico Elk applications were drawn unit by
unit. All 1st choice applicants for a unit were put in a hat
and drawn. If there were any leftover tags(which there usually
were not), applications with 2nd choice for that unit were
drawn. Now the Department of Game and Fish draw
the applications first, then look at the units chosen. If the
1st choice is full, they will look at your 2nd choice and so
on. You may now also mix weapon choices on your application.
For example, you may apply: 1st choice ~ 1st Rifle Hunt 2nd
choice ~ 3rd Archery Hunt 3rd choice ~ Muzzle Loader Hunt It
is possible to draw a quality tag with your 3rd choice. It
is a confusing system, but it will be to the applicants' advantage
to fill in the 2nd and 3rd choices. 2007 Deer tags will be
issued in the same fashion as Elk tags. The number of Deer
hunters is expected to be reduced approximately 20% state wide.
We do not expect much change in our area, but you should plan
your Mule Deer or Coues Deer hunt early.
