ARCHERY ELK hunts take place in the Gila Wilderness of southwestern
New Mexico. The unit encompasses not only the Gila Wilderness but
also the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. With a million acres to hunt and
only a limited number of tags issued for the 24-day season, hunting
pressure is very light. Although the tags are good for any elk, most
of our clients are hunting for bulls. The Gila Wilderness is known
for quality bulls and in this vast country a large percentage of
the bulls achieve the age to become trophies in anyone's eyes. Our
archery hunts are horseback type hunts out of a wilderness tent camp. The
pack-in is from a 2 to 6 hour horseback ride, depending on which
camp we're going to. We keep our camps small, preferring to take
only 4 hunters per camp. Our camps consist of wall tents, tepee tents
and dome tents. Meals are prepared over open fires and in dutch ovens.
Temperatures in September are usually warm with the low's being in
the 30's and warming up to near 80 during the day. Thundershowers
can be common in the afternoons. We run a 1 X 2 hunt (1 guide per
2 hunters) and our hunting methods include calling and sitting wallows
and water. Elk in the wilderness are not call-shy. You have three
6-day hunts to choose from, with the first two archery hunts having
the option of also harvesting a deer. You will pack in the day before
your hunt starts and pack out the day after the hunt ends. Please
allow 8 days here for your hunt.
RIFLE ELK hunts also take place in the Gila and Aldo Leopold
Wildernesses. These hunts are conducted in the same fashion as our
wilderness archery elk hunts. Elevations range from 7000 to 9000
feet with a wide variety of vegetation and topography. The lower
country consists of grassy mesas covered with junipers, pinons and
deep canyons. A little higher up and you get into Ponderosa pines
and Gamble oaks. The south slopes are juniper, pinon and oak brush.
The north slopes are considerably cooler with Douglas fir as the
dominant tree. The highest country consists of Aspen, Douglas fir
and wet alpine meadows. Weather is usually mild and dry in October.
Lows are usually in the mid 20's and can get up to near 70 during
the day. We can experience some mild storms during these hunts, but
they usually don't last long. Our hunting methods include spot and
stalk, still-hunting, and calling. 75% of the bulls taken are actually
spotted from horseback. Two 5 day hunts are available,
with a pack-in day and a pack-out day. You need to allow 7 days here for
your hunt. This is also a 1 X 2 hunt (1 guide per 2 hunters) and
we like to take 4 hunters per week. . Over the last 20 years, average
success is between 60% and 70%.
MUZZLE-LOADER ELK hunts take place in the
Zuni Mountains of west central New Mexico. This is a non-wilderness
unit. We use 4X4's, ATV's and walk to our hunting spots. Hunting metods
include calling, spot and stalk, and still-hunting. This is also a 1
X 2 hunt (1 guide per 2 hunters) and we usually take 4 hunters. |
