NEW ELK AND
DEER DRAWING SYSTEM IN NEW MEXICO
Deadline for Applying is: TBA Following information to be updated In
years past, New Mexico Elk applications were drawn unit by
unit. All 1st choice applicants for a unit were put in a hat
and drawn. If there were any leftover tags(which there usually
were not), applications with 2nd choice for that unit were
drawn. Now the Department of Game and Fish draw
the applications first, then look at the units chosen. If the
1st choice is full, they will look at your 2nd choice and so
on. You may now also mix weapon choices on your application.
For example, you may apply: 1st choice ~ 1st Rifle Hunt 2nd
choice ~ 3rd Archery Hunt 3rd choice ~ Muzzle Loader Hunt It
is possible to draw a quality tag with your 3rd choice. It
is a confusing system, but it will be to the applicants' advantage
to fill in the 2nd and 3rd choices. 2009 Deer tags will be
issued in the same fashion as Elk tags. The number of Deer
hunters is expected to be reduced approximately 20% state wide.
We do not expect much change in our area, but you should plan
your Mule Deer or Coues Deer hunt early.

Mule deer hunts are pack-in wilderness hunts, similar to our elk hunts. We offer 2 three-day hunts and a five-day hunt in early November. A three-day hunt will involve five days of your time here. A five-day hunt will require 7 days of your time. We usually take 4 to 6 hunters per week and licenses are on a lottery basis, so please contact us for information on applying for these hunts. We have one guide for two hunters. Mule deer numbers are generally down across the West. However, we do have some very good bucks in the remote areas we hunt. Mature bucks will have spreads in the 22 to 28 inch range, with an occasional 30 incher. Most are tall and have good mass. Shots will range from 50 to 350 yards. Coues deer are hunted in southwestern New Mexico and southern Arizona. We offer one 3 day hunt in New Mexico and one 5 day hunt in Arizona. Coues deer seem to be up in numbers and we have some excellent quality bucks in both states. Good optics and an accurate rifle are a must for Coues deer hunting. Success is usually high. These hunts are on a lottery basis so please contact us for information on applying for these hunts. |
